Google's 'Project Toscana': Revolutionizing Face ID on Pixel Phones
Google is on the cusp of addressing one of the Pixel's most frustrating shortcomings, according to an exclusive report from Android Authority. The tech giant is developing an advanced facial recognition system internally known as 'Project Toscana'. This cutting-edge feature is currently being tested on Pixel phones and Chromebooks, with early testers in Mountain View, California, using prototype devices under various lighting conditions.
The report highlights that Toscana's performance is on par with Apple's Face ID, a significant achievement. Crucially, it works reliably in low-light environments, a challenge that has plagued Google's previous attempts at face unlock. The Pixel 4, for instance, utilized radar and IR sensors, but Google eventually abandoned this approach.
More recent Pixel models reintroduced camera-based face unlock with enhanced machine learning capabilities. Starting with the Pixel 8, this feature can authenticate payments and secure apps, but it still struggles in darker environments. Android Authority's anonymous source suggests that Google has been exploring IR-based solutions for future Pixel devices, potentially as soon as the Pixel 11.
The timing of this development is intriguing, especially with the recent launch of the Pixel 10a. Despite the mid-range device's modest hardware changes, it lacks dramatic biometric upgrades. If Project Toscana is real and ready for prime time, it might not debut in the 10a, which arrives in March. Instead, it could indicate Google's renewed effort to build the Android equivalent of Face ID, with a more persistent focus on this technology.
