The legendary Igor Cavalera, ex-drummer of the iconic metal band SEPULTURA, has opened up about his enduring passion for pushing the boundaries of music. In a recent interview, he shared his thoughts on being recognized as one of the most influential metal drummers ever, stating, "It's an incredible feeling to be acknowledged for my work, especially as I've always strived to evolve as an artist and musician."
But here's where it gets interesting... Igor's relationship with drumming has taken an exciting turn over the years. He explained, "Drumming is an ever-evolving journey for me. I continuously explore new concepts and perspectives, keeping the instrument fresh and alive. It's all about rhythm - the pulse that drives melody and harmony. Drumming is an emotional and physical experience, a connection to the soul."
Igor's roots in metal and punk, with their raw energy and honesty, have shaped his unique style. However, he's evolved beyond speed and power, delving into the depths of space, texture, and trance.
Along with his brother Max, Igor founded SEPULTURA, but his musical journey has branched out into various projects. He's currently the drummer for CAVALERA, CAVALERA CONSPIRACY, and SOULWAX, among others. He's also one half of the electronic duo MIXHELL, founded with his wife Laima Leyton, which has taken him on global tours to iconic festivals.
In 2016, Igor joined the Belgian band SOULWAX, recording drums for their album "From Deewee" and touring with them. He's also founded PETBRICK, a project blending noise and electronics with intense drumming.
Igor's recent live performances have been intimate and experimental, featuring analog modular gear and visuals. His releases, such as "Aural Manifestations" and "Alucinações Sônicas," showcase his diverse musical range.
Igor's departure from SEPULTURA in 2006 was due to artistic differences, a decision made after taking a break from touring to spend time with his family.
And this is the part most people miss... Max Cavalera, Igor's brother, also left SEPULTURA in 1996 after a split with the band's manager, his wife Gloria.
So, what do you think? Is Igor's evolution as a musician a testament to his creativity, or has he strayed too far from his metal roots? Let us know in the comments!
