Kiama Community Rallies Behind Local Cyclist Riding for Cancer Research (2026)

A heartwarming display of community spirit in Kiama has united locals behind a brave cyclist's mission to support cancer research. The power of collective action is truly inspiring!

Kiama Lions recently hosted a fundraising event, a humble Bunnings sausage sizzle, to rally behind Viktor Vascia, a local cyclist preparing for an epic 1,400-kilometre journey from Canberra to Hobart. This journey is not just a physical feat but a deeply personal one for Vascia, who aims to raise awareness and funds for cancer research, a cause close to his heart.

The January 3rd fundraiser was a success, raising a significant $3,000 towards Vascia's ambitious goal of $11,000 for the Tour de Cure Signature Tour. This tour, starting in a few months, will see participants tackle an arduous nine-day ride, climbing over 22,000 metres through the Snowy Mountains and Tasmania's rugged landscapes.

But here's where it gets controversial... Vascia's motivation is not just about the physical challenge. It's a tribute to his father's battle with Multiple Myeloma, an incurable blood cancer. He says, "Riding and fundraising is my way of honouring him and pushing for progress." This personal connection adds a layer of emotion to his journey.

And this is the part most people miss... Vascia's preparation is intense. He's averaging 300 kilometres of cycling each week, often starting his day before dawn to fit training around a full-time job. He's also made significant lifestyle changes to ensure he's physically and mentally ready for the ride.

When asked about his motivation, Vascia reveals a powerful perspective: "I think of those who can't ride. My dad couldn't, but I'm healthy enough to do this." It's a reminder of the privilege of good health and the importance of using it to make a difference.

The fundraiser was organized by Ian Chellew, Vascia's father-in-law and a member of the Lions Club, who Vascia describes as a "true champion" of the cause. The Lions Club's support has been invaluable, especially in these challenging economic times.

As Vascia gears up for his journey, he hopes his story will inspire others to support cancer research. "Cancer is far too common. Almost everyone knows someone affected." He encourages people to donate, volunteer, or attend local fundraisers, emphasizing that every contribution makes a difference in the fight against cancer.

So, what do you think? Is this a cause worth rallying behind? Should we all be doing more to support cancer research and those affected? I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
